Visual Editing Explanation

One technique in which we had used for our editing process of the short film, was graphics and text. For this, we added simply the name of the film at the beginning overlaying nearer the end of the montage, to remind the audience of the name, as it holds importance toward the plot and a massive hint as to what the film is about. We also added some other graphics around at parts of the film, such as text stating how many days have past, what day it is, what week it is, what month even. This idea was purely to let the audience know where the time has skipped and changed, otherwise it would be quite confusing The idea would also show the change on the character's mindset, from wanting to look for others to simply accepting the fact he's alone; his stages of grief and deterioration.

We used a fade leading onto some static as a transition, mainly after each scene ends and starts We used this transition to mostly convey that it is going into a new scene entirely, and to give the audience some form of empathy as they may feel like they are sat back watching and unable to help, they are seated into the position of whomever is observing the 'experiment', watching as the subject loses his mind slowly.

We added a filter of course to also represent the deterioration of the character's mental state visually, as theres no physical way to really show any changes to his mental state other than this and his actions. We left the first scene natural of course, to really show that he's only just begun his isolation. Then as the film progressed, it got dimmer and dimmer, slowly seeming more and more lifeless and depressing, mostly tho as stated prior, to show the deterioration within the character's state of mind. In the final scene however we used two different filters put together, a brighter orange filter to convey the character's sudden spark of life and social interaction, even if it is with figments of his imagination taking the form of his friends. This was mostly used to show that he's hallucinating out of loneliness and his psyche is reaching the breaking point entirely before he goes completely insane.

Another technique that we had used is the montage itself, right at the beginning of the short film, we used this to show the various empty locations that were once widely used and widely populated,  Public parks, the school. This perfectly displayed one of the film's key themes; emptiness. As the film was based on lockdown, we wanted to properly paint and establish this image of how these once commonly used places, are now derelict, completely empty.

We had also used an additional visual within the last scene. The security effect, to show how the character actually appears, flashing back between this 'camera' view and the in - room view. This connoted properly how people can be viewed differently in different perspectives, and how being alone for such a long time can drive humans, a highly social species, insane and incoherent.

We also used a regular, basic fade. Using this as a transition for a couple instances, one leading up to the main dialogue within the last scene, and a couple within the montage, swapping the view of the corridor back and forth. This presents the passage of time properly, and especially the fade in the last scene, shows how his friend's are having a normal conversation with him despite the situation he is in.
